June Louise Freer McCallus passed away peacefully in Williamsport on Sept. 9, 2017. She was 97.
June's long and happy life began in Jersey Shore  on Jan. 1, 1920. She had the rare honor of being the first newborn of Jersey Shore for the year.
A 1938 graduate of Jersey Shore High School, she was later employed by the Atlantic and Pacific Co. and would spend her entire 40-year career at the Jersey Shore A&P Supermarket. She grew up and lived in her family home on Broad Street in Jersey Shore for over 50 years, prior to moving to nearby Avis during 1972.
The youngest of five children, she was a daughter of Charles Beacher Freer and Edith Clark Freer.
June cherished family and was devoted to preserving family values. June maintained a very close and loving relationship with her family. She spoke with her elder sister, the late Reva Felter, and her niece, the late Betty Cox, every evening. June and Betty were close in age and they would share a lifelong sister-like relationship.
Much of June's retirement years were spent conducting research and analysis of the Freer family genealogy.  Her exhaustive studies included frequent field trips and site visits to locations significant to the family history.  As a result of her research, she discovered and verified several family members and relatives who served in the Continental Army during the American Revolution. These discoveries led to her membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution, an organization in which she proudly participated for many years.
June is preceded in death by her husband, Carl McCallus, whom she often referred to as the love of her life, and four siblings, Reva, Edna, Forrest "Buck" and William "Hun" Freer.
She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, two step-children,  several grand and great-grand nieces and nephews, and two grandchildren.
A time of visitation will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 15, 2017 at Frederick B. Welker Funeral Home, 125 N. Main St., Jersey Shore, with a funeral service beginning at 11 a.m. Father Bert Kozen will officiate. She will be buried next to her husband, Carl, at the Jersey Shore Cemetery.

So sorry to hear of Aunt June's passing. I never really got to know much of my father's family, but she was very kind when my father (Fred) passed away. I extend our sympathy to my cousins and their loss and will pray for God's comfort during this time.
