Melvin L. "Pete" Edwards, 90, a longtime resident of Woolrich, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2019, at the Watsontown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, surrounded by his devoted and loving family.
Born Oct. 5, 1928, in Jersey Shore, he was the son to the late Theodore and Jennie (Jerles) Edwards. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers and sisters-in-law, Vernon and Lila Edwards, James and Carolina Edwards and Carl "Butch" Edwards; and  one sister and two brothers-in-law, Inez and Bruce McKean and Carl Swinehart.
He was married Aug. 9, 1947, to the former Florence Cline who survives, celebrating 71 years of marriage.
Pete was a 1947 graduate of Jersey Shore High School. He was a combat veteran of the Korean War, serving as a sergeant with the U.S. Army in Company F, 31st Infantry Regiment in Korea. He received the Combat Infantry Badge, the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. Although proud of his service, Pete was very humble about his accomplishments and spoke little of his service unless he was asked.
Pete worked hard all of his life, first as a younger teenager at the Woolrich Woolen Mills, then Korea, and then he was the manager of Woolrich General Company store retiring after 45 years. He enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting trips with his family, and loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a member of the Blue Lodge Masons, the Korean War Veterans in Williamsport, and a former member of the Kiwanis Club in Lock Haven. Pete volunteered his cooking skills for many organizations.
Surviving in addition to his wife are his two sons, Richard (Jody) Edwards, of Milton, and Jeffrey (Robin) Edwards, of Rawlings, Md.; grandson, Daniel (Hope) Edwards, of Milton; granddaughter, Christina (Nick) Fellander, of Washington; great-grandsons, Dylan Edwards and Dominic (Lexi) Mahoney, of Kansas; sisters, Lauranne Swinehart, of Avis, Ruth Carson, of Jersey Shore, and Dianne (Mike) Larson, of Loyalsock; and a sister-in-law, Mary Jane Edwards.
A time of visitation will be held 5 to 7 p.m. Friday evening, Jan. 25, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday morning at Frederick B. Welker Funeral Home, 125 N. Main St., Jersey Shore. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at Welker Funeral Home. He will be laid to rest in the Woolrich Cemetery with full military honors accorded by the Korean War Veterans of Williamsport. The Rev. Gary Shumway will officiate.
In lieu of flowers of flowers, memorial contributions in his name may be made to the Korean War Veterans at P.O. Box 3232, Williamsport, PA 17701.
