Dr. James G. Davis, 61, of Philadelphia, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, partner, and friends on Tuesday, May 27, 2025 at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center.
Born September 8, 1963 in Rochester, NY, he was a son to the late Gordon T. Davis and the former Louise N. Nogaj. Jim received his Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Pennsylvania in 1994, after completing a B.S. in Molecular Biology at PSU, and remained a member of the Penn community for his entire career. During his postdoctoral research in the Department of Pathology, he cloned and characterized an inner ear-specific collagen that he described in a landmark paper in Science. He joined the faculty as a Research Scientist and then Research Assistant Professor in the Department until his arrival in the Baur Lab in 2010.
He deeply valued his relationships with colleagues and would go to any length to help a friend in need. He took great joy in being able to brighten other people's days with a piece of chocolate or leftover cookie. He cherished his nieces and nephews and was the best Uncle and Great Uncle. He will be deeply missed by many.
He is survived by his partner, Andi Bergeson; sister, Nancy (Joe) Feerrar, of Jersey Shore and Beth (Gary) Durrant, Hillsboro, NJ; brothers, Billl (Christa Fritz), Gilbertsville, PA and Alan (Lori), Dallas, TX; his nieces and nephews, Joey (Abby) Feerrar; Jeffrey (Jaime) Feerrar; Derek (Beth) Fleegle; Cayla Davis; Christopher Davis; Sarah (Matt) Schneider; Rebecca Davis; Rachel Davis; Andrew Davis; and Craig (Becca) Durrant. and 10 great nieces and nephews, Isabella, Madelyn, Lily, Krew, Eleanor, Lincoln, Logan, Graham, Josie and Colette.
Jim had a soft spot for cats, especially misfits and strays. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the MEOW Project, http://www.projectmeow.org or a charity of your choice. Services will be held at the convenience of the family.
