Elery Dougherty Obituary

Elery Newton Dougherty, known lovingly to family and friends as "Newt," passed away peacefully on March 27, 2026 at the age of 93, in Jersey Shore, the same community where his story began.

Born on September 23, 1932, in Jersey Shore, Newt lived a full and meaningful life rooted in family, hard work, and quiet devotion. In 1951, Newt answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Air Force, where he served honorably until 1955. It was during his military service, while stationed in Newfoundland, Canada, that he met the love of his life, Hilda Sainsbury. The two married and built a life together that spanned an incredible 69 years. Their union was blessed with three sons and many beloved grandchildren.

After his time in the Air Force, Newt returned home and built a solid career in the Jersey Shore area. He worked for years at the former Piper Aircraft and at Sylvania, before retiring from M.S. Bierly Chevrolet in 1994. He was a dependable, hardworking man who took pride in providing for his family. Newt's happiest times were often spent outdoors, camping with family and friends and making memories that would last for generations. He also treasured his many trips back to Newfoundland to visit with Hilda's family, a tradition that kept those bonds strong across the miles.

He is survived by three sons, John Dougherty, Richard Dougherty and wife Diane, and Howard Dougherty; his brother, Kenneth and Robert Dougherty; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews, who will carry his memory forward. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hilda; mother, Lola Sprague Dougherty Phlegor; his father, Howard Dougherty; his brother, Lavern Dougherty; his sister, Fledabelle Cohick; and a daughter in laws, Kim Dougherty and Denise Dougherty.

May Newt find peace and rest in the arms of the Lord, and may his family find comfort in the knowledge that his gentle spirit lives on in all who knew him. Services will be held at the privacy of the family.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff at Jersey Shore Nursing and Rehabilitation for all of their caring and support during this time.

In lieu of flowers, please make all donations to Antes Fort Methodist Church.

Arrangements are entrusted to Frederick B. Welker Funeral Home, Jersey Shore. www.WelkerFuneralHome.com. Thank you
