Heaven gained a spunky angel on Tuesday, January 31 when Galdys I. Overdurf, age 97, burst through the pearly gates after a short stay at the Gatehouse.
Born Aug. 8, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Clara (Litz) Thomas of Jersey Shore. She attended Jersey Shore schools and earned a nursing degree from the Lakewood New Jersey School of Nursing. She worked 14 years at the Community Memorial Hospital in New Jersey before moving back to Jersey Shore and continuing her nursing career at the Jersey Shore Hospital, eventually retiring from Dr. Recinto’s office.
Gladys was the definition of a free spirit, always living independently and on her own terms. She loved to travel, and Sunday afternoon car rides with her niece, Nancy (Stormie) Oakes, were some of her favorites. She loved to take trips to Kingston, N.Y. to visit her friends Joyce (God daughter), Simone, Peggy and Rosemarie. Her family will always cherish the multitude of ‘Aunt G' stories she shared and memories she made with them.
The second of 5 children, she was predeceased by sisters Betty (Geyer), Martha (McClellan) and brothers Ralph and Robert. She was also preceded in death by infant daughter, Connie Lou Calhoun, and daughter Sharon I. Calhoun. She is survived by many nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews, specifically her best friend and caregiver, Nancy. She also spent many hours with great-nephew, Dewey, and honorary niece, Joann.
In honoring her wishes there will be no services. A private graveside memorial will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be made to the Susquehanna Health Foundation, c/o The Gatehouse, 100 Grampian Blvd, Williamsport, PA 17701.
Arrangements are entrusted to Frederick B. Welker Funeral Home, Jersey Shore.
