Leila R. Hawkins was called home to our Lord July 4, 2021. She was 94. Leila was born Sept. 20, 1926, in Jersey Shore to the late Florence (Larison) Van Emon and the late Carl Van Emon.
She is survived by her sister, Jeanne Shreckengast (husband Joseph). Leila is also survived by her children; son Michael Yohe (wife Margaret), daughter Susan (Yohe) Schramm (husband Stephen); step-children Fredrick Hawkins (wife Patsy), Sandra Hawkins and Debra (Hawkins) Vencill. She was blessed with nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Leila graduated from Jersey Shore Area High School in 1944 where she sang in several operettas and with the glee club. She was a talented seamstress who used her talent throughout her entire life. Along with her late husband, Claude W. Yohe, she lived for 50 years in the Jersey Shore area. After her marriage to the late Edward L. Hawkins, she moved to Oxon Hill, Md., followed by a move to Manassas, Va. Upon Ed’s retirement in 1994, they moved to Sun City, Ariz., where she resided until his passing in 2017. Later that year, Leila moved to Boerne, Texas, to be closer to family.
Burial will be at graveside at the Jersey Shore Cemetery at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 21, 2021, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at the Avis United Methodist Church in Avis. A luncheon will be served following the service.
