Maxine Betty Charles, 90, Jersey Shore, passed away Friday, March 27, 2020. Born June 22, 1929 in Jersey Shore, she was the daughter of William and Vera Welshans.
Maxine was a 1947 graduate of Jersey Shore High School. She married William T. Charles on November 25, 1948. Maxine was an employee of Weis and Sylvania before she became a homemaker. She owned and operated Maxine’s BBQ in Jersey Shore for several years. Maxine was a devoted member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Avis. She was involved in many church activities. Most recently she was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jersey Shore. Maxine’s true love and priority was her family. She cherished her time with them. Among other things, Maxine loved to travel and wintered in Florida for many years. She loved to cook and she enjoyed visiting with friends and playing table games.
Maxine is survived by three sisters, Pauline Reever, Helen (Don) Shemory, and Beverly (Russ) Rhinehart; three children, Darla Zimmerman of Annville, Thomas (Rebecca) Charles of Jersey Shore, and Dennis (Leslie) Charles of Jersey Shore; and her grandchildren, Jennifer (John) Shaffer, Patricia (Eric) Hess, Gwendolyn Charles (Ryan Dauberman), Joshua (Ashley) Zimmerman, Brianne (Matthew) Cole, Erica Charles (Chris Ungard), Miranda (Brian) Galvin. She was also adored and loved by 17 great grandchildren.
Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, sisters: Marguerite Powers and Esther Kephart and brothers: Joseph Welshans, Robert Welshans, and William Welshans.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. She will be laid to rest in the Jersey Shore Cemetery.
