Pauline Hoxie Obituary

Pauline V. Hoxie, 95, of Jersey Shore, passed away Thursday, Feb. 15, 2024 at Geisinger Jersey Shore Hospital.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, 2024 at the First United Methodist Church, 236 S. Main St., Jersey Shore. A time of visitation will be held from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service Saturday at church. She will be laid to rest next to her husband in the Jersey Shore Cemetery.

Born Feb. 21, 1928 in North Syracuse, NY, she was the daughter of the Rev. Charles Ouderkirk and the former Norine Ames. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Mendelssohn I. Hoxie on Jan. 10, 2022; and her brother and sister, Richard and Aldreth of upstate NY.

She is survived by her sister, Barbara Pepper, of Central Square, NY, three daughters, Susan Hoxie, of Frankfurt, Germany, Janice Rivera, of Avis, and Anne Bittner, of Purcellville, VA; four grandchildren; Dan Lewis (April), Stephanie Tomaselo (Mike), Nathan Bittner (Kelly), and Ashley Bittner; four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

One of Pauline’s favorite stories to tell was how she met Mendy when he joined the choir of her dad’s church. When her girlfriend told her he was single, Pauline mischievously said, “Well, we’ll have to see about that.” They were married 2 years later. Her family and friends remember her for her wonderful sense of humor, her kindness and loving care for everyone she met. She was a true reflection of the love of her Savior, Jesus. Her children credit Pauline for their own faith, and her life was a role model and example to them and to all who knew her.

She served others in many ways, starting with her family as a stay at home mom. She was often found cooking in the kitchen at church, volunteering in the community and taking others into her home. From owning the Time and Talent craft store with Mendy, to her work at ManorCare, she loved blessing others. Her long career with ManorCare stretched way beyond retirement as they called her back time after time to fill in - to which she never hesitated to say, “Yes, I’ll be there”. With her extroverted personality, she truly loved being with others, and her warm and joyful demeanor caused others to truly love being with her.

In her 60’s she began taking in foreign language students, in her 70’s she joined the Gideons, served as a camp cook in the Black Forest of Germany, and in her 80’s she became a Comfort Keeper to bless the “old people”, of whom she did not consider herself one. Her home and her heart were always open to all.

She was a rare and beautiful woman of God whose smile and warmth will always be missed and whose life will never be forgotten.

Pauline was a member of the 1st United Methodist Church of Jersey Shore for 58 years and a member of Gideons. Her family would like any donations to be sent to:  Gideons International, P O Box 1081, Williamsport, PA 17701
